It’s easy to see a beautiful room online and want to recreate it immediately. But a room that looks good in a photograph may not work for your routine, your space, or the things you already own. Before collecting more things, spend a little time noticing what your room is asking for.

Start with your everyday life

Think about what actually happens in the room. Do you work at the dining table? Read in the evenings? Have friends over? Need a quiet corner after a busy day? Write down a few of those moments. They give the design a purpose beyond looking good.

Then notice what gets in the way. A chair that blocks the path, a surface that collects everything, or a lamp that never quite reaches your favourite seat can tell you more than a mood board.

Look at the light

Visit the room at different times of day. Notice where daylight falls, where shadows gather, and which areas feel inviting. Try moving a chair towards a window or changing where a lamp sits before deciding you need something new.

Colours and materials will also look different from morning to evening. Bring samples into the actual room and live with them for a little while. A colour on a screen is a starting point, not a final decision.

Measure, then make room to move

Measure your room, doors, windows, and existing furniture. Sketch a simple plan—no perfect drawing required. Mark the paths you walk most often, and try not to fill every empty area.

If you’re considering a large piece, use masking tape to mark its footprint on the floor. Walk around it. See whether doors can open and chairs can pull out comfortably. Space around your furniture is part of the design too.

Keep what already feels like you

A meaningful object, an old chair, or a piece of art you love can be the beginning of the whole room. You don’t have to start again to make a space feel different.

Choose three words for how you want the room to feel—perhaps calm, warm, and welcoming. When you look at a new piece, ask whether it helps create that feeling and serves a real purpose.
